While digital music of both the legal and “pirate” varieties chips further and further away at the compact disc's status as the dominant format of choice for record buyers with each passing year, there are some pretty compelling arguments for the power of the physical product over the ephemeral MP3 download making the rounds at the moment.
This fall has seen a slew of ludicrously over-appointed “super deluxe” box sets unleashed on the market, collections that take that time-honoured music-industry money-maker, the reissue, to almost absurd levels of completism and frilly packaging. U2's Achtung Baby , Nirvana's Nevermind, the Rolling Stones' Some Girls , Serge Gainsbourg's Histoire de Melody Nelson and the Who's Quadrophenia are among the classics given lavish, multi-disc form — usually with splashy add-ons like DVDs, hard-bound books, photo prints, reproduced memorabilia and the like appended — just in time for the holidays, about the only time of the year when troubled CD retailers can count on brisk business.
