Port closure culminates Oakland protest
Drivers stopped their trucks, blocked by the river of people. Several honked and gave a thumbs-up sign in support, even as protesters climbed onto the cargo beds of their trucks, braving a treacherous climb to the top.
“It's OK,” said Mann Singh, 42, a truck driver from Pittsburg who was stuck in the middle of the road with demonstrators climbing on his vehicle. “They are for us, you know. We work 16 hours to make $200.”
“But don't get hurt and fall down,” he said to the young people on his roof.
At another truck, Jason Trager, 24, a doctoral student in mechanical engineering, gave his female friends a boost as they struggled to get on top of the truck.
“I wanted to see the view,” Trager said after climbing down. “It's a very visible place to shut down ... because it's the largest center of commerce in Oakland that's freely accessible.”
The port closure marked the culmination of a day of protests and actions that began at 9 a.m. with a rally in downtown Oakland at the intersection of Broadway and 14th Street, when hundreds of demonstrators blocked traffic.
