The History and Care of the Silk Scarf

The silk scarf has rapidly become the popular fashion accessory for both men and women. Primarily it is worn by women on the head, around the neck or around the waist. The first silk scarves were made in 12-inch by 12-inch size but since have grown to come in an array of sizes and colors. By adding them to an outfit, anyone can create a fashionable ensemble. Many of these precious items are passed down through the generations thanks to delicate care and handling. The silk scarf originated in ancient Rome. It was a cloth accessory that was created in China and given to women who were working in the hot weather. During the 19th century, silk scarves were used by the Chinese, French, Swedish and Croatian royalty to establish social class and nobility. They were found to be worn as shawls, neckwraps and head wraps. There fabrics are considered the most luxurious and therefore were reserved for only the wealthy in ancient times. Today, silk scarves are costly as the price of silk is extensive. Silk is spun by caterpillars and silkworms. It takes time to cultivate and harvest the silk thread to then turn them into fabric to be used for the scarf. There are many different ways to wear a silk scarf today including as a sarong, head covering, belt, part of an Indian sari and as a simple pocket square. Silk scarves rarely come in one solid color. Instead they are designed with a variety of beautiful prints that are made to be fashionable and make a statement. The most legendary brand of silk scarves is Hermes, a French brand in which all scarves are hand sewn. The first scarf was created in 1928. Today, these scarves are regularly priced starting at $375 each. This is the reason they are sought after and so popular. There are many knock of style of silk scarves on the market today as well. These are often cheap and only made partially of silk thread. It is very common to find these at any department store. There are only a few high end brands such as Hermes that make 100% silk scarves. A silk scarf is relatively easy to care for. The primary goal is to keep it out of direct sunlight for long periods of time and also avoid chemicals or detergents that will cause the fabric to deteriorate. Silk will lose shine and durability when it is wet by up to 20%. You should store a silk scarf in a dresser or hanging in a closet where it will not become creased and is protected from the elements. It is best if a silk scarf is dry cleaned. If you put a silk scarf in a hot dryer, it will cause the fabric to shrink and pull instead of remaining solid and beautiful. Finally, silk is a porous fabric that needs to be able to breathe.
