London 2012 hopefuls face 'acid test'

ZAMBIA'S chances of sending a big contingent to London 2012 appear to be fading as most athletes need to undergo stringent Olympics qualifiers to secure slots.

National Olympic Committee (NOC) general secretary, Hazel Kennedy said Zambia had only five athletes on scholarships, and the challenge was on NOC to qualify those athletes. Kennedy said after a closed door NOC annual general meeting at the Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC) in Lusaka at the weekend that the onus would be on the associations to get serious and ensure their athletes competed at qualify for the games.

She, however, said she was not sure what measures the various associations would put up but that the NOC would help where it sees that some athletes could actually qualify. The athletes currently on scholarships are swimmers Jane Jordan and Jade Howard, and runners Rachael Nachula and Saviour Kombe, who are both based in Mauritius, and Prince Mumba based in United States.
