A veteran Santa Claus hopes to bring a few smiles back to Christchurch this year.
Stuart Oliver, who is playing the jolly fellow in red for the 21st time this Christmas, is determined to bring good cheer after a year of earthquakes, although he acknowledged it would be difficult.
"Some people have lost loved ones. That's the hardest. Christmas will not be the same," he said.
Sitting in a cafe sipping a cappuccino, with a grey beanie on his head and chocolate in his beard, it is a stretch to link him with the Santa who greeted shoppers in the Bush Inn Shopping Centre just moments ago.
"The only giveaway is the beard," said Oliver, 49.
He starts growing his beard in July and has it bleached in the first week of December. He said it was more comfortable than wearing a fake beard.
He has been playing Santa since 1990, when, during a visit to a children's hospital, he was hastily asked to play Santa after the original Santa had a heart attack.

I thought I will be having my dream come true to have a cold Christmas holiday this year. This simple slouch beanie hat is quite easy and fast to complete. Get the knitting pattern after this. I used eye lashes texture yarn which I bought at Spotlight during my recent trip to Singapore . The yarn is classified as super bulky, but you may use any similar yarn to replace it. If you want to have a longer slouch behind the hat, just increase the stitches. You can also add a pom-pom at the back or attach your favorite brooch to decorate this simple hat....
