Is there a rule(s) or is it tradition? Is there any benefit to not wearing the socks? The socks would seem to provide a bit more protection, albeit with less ventilation. If tradition, how did the 2 traditions evolve differently?
Correct that there is an NFL uniform rule regarding socks that applies equally to all teams. However, the NCAA also has a sock rule but it only requires uniformity within the team. So, by rule, if one player wears short socks, everyone on the team must wear them.
