Stitching seniors lend hand to aid cancer patients
&Nbsp;Millie Caridis, 85, and Helen Harris, 82, have known each other since they were children and remain fast friends eight decades later.
Residents at Providence Point in Scott Township for just over a year, the duo share time together, along with about a dozen other ladies from the retirement complex, as part of the needlework group. The group - all ladies - sit and knit two times a month making a variety of items including soft caps for chemotherapy patients who lose their hair during cancer treatment.
According to one member, Joan McAnulty, a former nurse, the caps are distributed at the UPMC facility on Oxford Drive in Bethel Park. Recently, McAnulty was knitting a fuzzy brown yarn cap, affectionately known as a Wiggie, that will somewhat resemble real hair.
For McAnulty, and most of the others in the group, knitting has been a lifelong hobby. McAnulty learned how to knit in grade school from her left-handed mother.
