Opening ceremony kicks off another year of Four Diamonds fundraiser

UNIVERSITY PARK — Caitlin Rush still remembers line dance moves to the lyrics of The Sugarhill Gang song “Apache (Jump On It),” as the then-10-year-old stuck to her mom’s side in 2000, her first Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon experience.

Dancing for the first time this year, Rush also has the T-shirt from that year, and plans to wear it this weekend. When she was 10, it hung to her knees. Today it fits the Penn State senior perfectly.

Rush and others reflected on Thons from years past Friday as hundreds of students took to the floor of the Bryce Jordan Center — and thousands more took to the stands — for the 40th anniversary of the 46-hour culmination of a year of fundraising.

The anniversary will be acknowledged throughout the weekend, including logos from previous years in a laser light show, and logo T-shirts in a fashion show.

The event benefits the Four Diamonds Fund, which helps families with children fighting pediatric cancer at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. More than 300 families will attend Thon this weekend, and the event raised more than $9.5 million last year.

Sock Tips: The Leg - Knitting Fever

For instance, these Leaf Lace Socks from the Knit Noro book are a good way to practice lace knitting.

Since socks are small they are a good project to test something out and if you decide you don’t like it you don’t have to worry about leaving a large project unfinished. They are also a good choice for testing a new yarn or indulging in a special yarn....

O'Meara This pattern is for a simple basic woman’s sock pattern that is easy to knit in fingering weight yarn on one circular needle. It is specifically written in order to use the many self-striping sock yarns that are available today, but is also a wonderful pattern for solid colors and variegated yarns. The pattern is written for a woman’s size 7-1/2 to 8-1/2 foot with a circumference at the ball of the foot of 9 inches. This pattern uses one circular needle (in two different sizes) to knit the majority of the sock, with two sections being knit with straight single-point needles. There are 5 short seams to sew by hand. I specifically wrote this pattern for the ease of...
