Vernon area residents knit for Special Olympic Winter games
Currently, 40 states hold their own Special Olympics. In 2009, the Idaho winter games were held in Boise and the idea for a scarf project was initiated. The scarves were meant to be a symbol of unity, compassion, support and empowerment for the athletes, family members, coaches and volunteers. A call went out from Red Heart, the yarn company that now sponsors the scarf production, for 5,000 blue and white scarves. By game time, nearly 60,000 scarves arrived from every state and 12 countries around the world.
Today, the Special Olympics USA Scarf Project is a national project, with New Jersey requiring a 2012 total of 1,400 scarves. Locally, 20 knitters of the Circle of Yarns, under the guidance of Chairperson Suzanne Schiavoni, have produced 24 scarves to be used by the athletes, family members and coaches this past week at Mountain Creek.
"We’re called the Circle of Yarns," Schiavoni stated. "Yarns for knitting and yarns meaning our chatting, tales and conversations.

If you’re sensitive to coldness you may want to use two garments—a wicking layer such as tights, and a wind-resistant layer such as jogging pants. For tops, it is advisable to use three layers—a wicking base garment like silk, an insulating layer like fleece, and a wind resistant athletic jacket.
