Teen allowance: When and how much

TOKYO, October 31, 2011 - When we lived in Manhattan, and Maia was attending the United Nations International School (UNIS), I walked more than fifty blocks each day just to avoid using the bus – and to save a couple of bucks. Rain or shine, blazing hot or freezing cold, I’d drop off Maia, have a cup of coffee with the mom gang, and start the long walk home. Until Maia started riding the ubiquitous yellow school bus home, I would also always walk back to school to pick her up.

Saving money comes to me naturally. To keep our electricity bill down, I turn off the lights whenever I leave a room, and I keep the room temperature at 78 degrees in the summer and 72 degrees in the winter. I refrain from repeatedly opening the refrigerator and freezer, run the washer only when I have a full load, and make sure I’m baking several batches of cookies at once whenever I turn on the oven.

In Vienna and Tokyo, when I went to the supermarket, I never failed to bring my own bags – because I’m “green,” of course, but also because plastic bags cost extra. I’m not embarrassed to cut out coupons, and I plan our meals around ingredients that are in season, or on sale.
